Book Cover-

This is a book cover design I created in my Advanced Graphic Design and Branding class at which I had to design for National Banned Books week. The rubric for this assignment was, “For Banned Books Week, you will be designing a new dust jacket for your choice of a previously challenged book from a list provided by https://bannedbooksweek.org. As a part of the dust jacket, you will be responsible for designing a new front cover, back cover, spine, and inside flaps. The design should reflect the content of the book, have a clear and legible information hierarchy, and should be eye-catching and interesting in order to invite a possible reader to pick it up. Sketch, research, sketch some more, and then develop your ideas. Avoid obvious and expected solutions. Don’t be afraid to experiment with simulated die cuts or vellum. Include all elements that are typically included on a dust jacket - this includes a bar code, author info, price, quotes, publisher’s branding, captions, web addresses, etc. The designs will be used as part of a display in the Milligan Library during Banned Book Week, September 18-24, 2022.” This was an assignment where my classmates and I had to work closely with the librarians. I chose to do the book “To Kill a Mockingbird”. I chose to depict a bird cage with a mockingbird inside portraying the racial injustice within the book. The mockingbird is to represent the enslaved African American within the story. I feel as if this story is more dark and gloomy; therefore, I wanted to use a dark color palette. I chose to use black and a deep red and offset that with a light gray. For this assignment, there were many things at which I wanted to include. For example, the author’s biography, a summary of the book, specific quotes within the book that are inspiring, and a wanted to include an indication for this book winning the Pulitzer Prize.

This is a close-up version of my work.
